Bridal fashion: What's hot this season

You'll never go wrong with a simple white dress, but what if you want to be more fashion-forward? From taking on the trends to adding just a touch to your traditional look, we have you covered.

The Trend: Eye-catching color
All white is all right, but this season is all about color. No, we're not telling you to wear a shocking red or black dress down the aisle. Designers are creating gowns with a hint of tint _ from pale pinks, greens and blues to rich platinums and golds _ on trims and embroidery (a small blue sash or a delicate pink flower on an otherwise white gown). Some designers shocked us by creating dresses with all-over color: pink chiffon sheaths, bold blue ball gowns, and yellow silk A-lines.

Sample the look: Give your gown a colorful splash with a shawl in one of the season's pale pastels.

The Trend: Vintage silhouettes
Bridal designers can't seem to let go of the past, and this season they were inspired by everything vintage, from the roaring '20s to the fabulous '50s. Simple sheaths with low-waist silhouettes and long skirts with movement have flapper-esque appeal, while fuller ball gowns with natural waists and layers of crinoline pay homage to Peggy Sue (who got married not so long ago). Some designers groove into the swinging '60s, with short mod fashions that would go perfectly with white knee-high go-go boots.

Sample the look: Shop your local thrift store or Salvation Army and pick up a vintage beaded purse in white or ivory.

The Trend: Romantic ruffles
Over the last few years bridal runways have brought an onslaught of thrills, chills and, most importantly, frills. This season is no exception. Luscious ruffles are more modern and sophisticated than ever, offering movement, texture and femininity and no sign of Little Bo Peep. They are draped around the neckline (with a nod to the old-time Hollywood starlet), cascade every which way down the bodice and make a grand exit at the hemline (Romona Keveza's ruffled confection took over 200 yards of fabric to make). Shed no tiers, my dears, we're loving ruffles.

Sample the look: Keep your gown simple, but opt for a delicate veil with a ruffled or pleated edge (which will softly frame your face).

The Trend: Fresh flowers
Yes, there's always your bouquet, but why not take the florals a step further? Big, bold flowers made of silks and satins and dotted with beads and jewels are popping up on gowns. The blossoms are often dotted over full skirts, used as a decorative touch to an elegant sash or placed as a surprise at the small of the back. If you're a real flower child, consider one of this season's all-over floral gowns, which feature flowers (whether lace or appliqued) from top to toe. Marrying in winter? Use these flowers to put some spring into your style.

Sample the look: Pin a sparkly floral brooch to a dress with a plain neckline (now would be a great time to ransack your grandmother's jewelry box).

The Trend: Stunning sashes
Sashes, ribbons, and belts are a bridal fashion revolution, with almost every designer dabbling in the trend. Who can blame them? Understanding why is a cinch: Sashes do wonders for certain body types, a well-placed belt downsizes a waist, gives shape to a boyish figure and accents hourglass curves.

Sample the look: Look for a dress with ruching on the waist to get the slimming effect without totally committing to the trend.
